About Percentage Calc
Percentage questions come in several shapes — what is 15% of a number, what percentage one number is of another, and what change occurred between two figures. Each uses a different calculation.
How to use it
- Choose the kind of percentage you need.
- Enter your figures.
- Read the answer.
Worth knowing
A percentage rise and fall of the same size do not cancel out: down 50% then up 50% leaves you 25% below where you started, because each is applied to a different base.
Common questions
- Percentage or percentage point?
- A move from 10% to 12% is two percentage points, and a 20% increase. Financial and polling reporting depends on the distinction.
- How do I reverse a discount?
- Divide by one minus the discount rate, rather than adding the same percentage back on.
