About Video to GIF

A GIF is a short loop with a limited palette, so the useful trick is choosing a few seconds worth repeating rather than converting a whole clip. Short, tightly cropped loops stay sharp and small enough to post anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Load a video file from your device.
  2. Set the start and end of the section you want to loop.
  3. Convert and save the GIF.

Worth knowing

GIF stores every frame as a still image, so length and frame rate drive file size far more than resolution does. Two or three seconds is usually the sweet spot.

Common questions

Why is my GIF so large?
Duration and frame rate, almost always. Halving the length roughly halves the file; dropping a few frames per second helps again.
Will the sound be kept?
No. The GIF format has no audio track at all, which is why captions are common on social clips.
